1st Workshop with external guests on May 19th at our Cergy campus

On May 19th the Management department hosted the first PhD Research Bootcamp @ESSEC: Building Excellence in Your Academic Career, which took place at our Cergy Campus. During the workshop, ESSEC PhD students had an exciting opportunity to receive individual feedback from invited outstanding faculty as well as to learn from their academic experiences.

The workshop started with presentations by guest panelists dedicated to tips for succeeding in an academic career: Prof. Andrea Fosfuri (SDA Bocconi School of Management), Prof. Spencer Harrison (INSEAD), Prof. Balazs Kovacs (Yale School of Management), and Prof. Grazia Santangelo (Copenhagen Business School).

Then senior ESSEC PhD students presented their research, followed by individual feedback from assigned guest faculty as well as interaction with the wider audience including ESSEC faculty and PhD students. The ESSEC PhD students’ presentations comprised research on gender differences in attitudes towards competition and performance in competitive settings (Francesca Nannetti); on the creation, performance, and survival of employee ventures (Marco Galo); on how firms perceive investment climate (Cheng Si); on an ameliorative role work can play for a grieving employee (Lidiia Pletneva); on how emotion shapes the valuation of human life (Yosra Aleahmad); on the appropriate organizational design responses to a shift toward remote work (Dong Nghi Pham); and on the impact of environmental activism on firm’s performance (Shubham Singh).

With the return to in-person events, the coffee breaks and group lunch also provided PhD students with opportunities to continue the conversations with faculty about ongoing research and a chance to get valuable advice on it.

Special thanks to the organizers Prof. Raffaele Conti, Prof. Elisa Operti, and Prof. Maciej Workiewicz for an excellent opportunity for the PhD students to receive valuable feedback from not only internal faculty but also from the invited faculty from top business schools in the world. This was a great start to the new tradition that PhD students will have a chance to enjoy and benefit from in upcoming years!
